Electrical Engineer Resume Keywords: Discipline, Software and Standards
Electrical engineering covers work that has almost nothing in common beyond the word electrical. Someone designing a 33kV substation protection scheme, someone laying out an eight-layer PCB and someone programming a Rockwell PLC on a bottling line all hold the same degree and would each fail the others' interview. Employers know this and screen on the discipline first, so a page that says electrical engineer and lists generic competencies matches every posting weakly and none of them well.
Standards are cited by number and searched by number
Electrical adverts quote standards the way legal adverts quote statutes, and the numbers are exact strings. In the US that means the NEC as NFPA 70, arc flash work under NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584 for incident energy, IEEE 519 for harmonics and NEMA equipment ratings. In the UK and Europe it means BS 7671 for installations, BS EN 61439 for assemblies, IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 for functional safety with SIL ratings, IEC 60204 for machinery, and ATEX or DSEAR for hazardous areas.
Product compliance is its own cluster and it is increasingly named in postings as UKCA marking has joined CE. The EMC Directive, the Low Voltage Directive, radio equipment approvals, and the testing that goes with them — radiated and conducted emissions, immunity, pre-compliance testing in an anechoic chamber — are all searchable and few competing pages carry them.
Say what your relationship to the standard was. Working to a standard, writing a compliance matrix, taking a product through a test house and closing out failures are four different levels of involvement, and the last one is what a hiring manager remembers.
Simulation and calculation tools are the technical proof
Every electrical discipline has a calculation layer, and naming it is what turns a claim into evidence. MATLAB and Simulink appear across control systems, power electronics and signal processing. SPICE and LTspice sit under circuit design; PSCAD, ETAP and PowerFactory under power systems; Ansys HFSS and Keysight ADS under RF; Amtech and Dialux under building services electrical.
Attach the calculation to a decision. “Ran a short-circuit and arc flash study across a 26-panel LV distribution system and reduced the incident energy category at eleven boards by reconfiguring protection settings” names software, standard, scale and outcome in one sentence, and it is the kind of line a hiring engineer will call you about.
For hardware roles, laboratory work is worth stating explicitly because it is what distinguishes a designer from a simulator: bring-up, debugging with an oscilloscope and logic analyser, thermal measurement, environmental and vibration testing, and design verification against a written test plan.
Professional status and sector matter more than years
Chartered Engineer status through the IET, or a Professional Engineer license in the US, is a stated requirement on a meaningful share of senior electrical postings — particularly in consultancy, utilities and anywhere designs are signed off for public infrastructure. Write it with the institution, the year and, if you are partway through, the stage you have reached. Incorporated Engineer status and an IET-accredited degree are separately valuable and separately searched.
Sector is the second discriminator. Utilities and grid, rail with its own signalling and traction vocabulary, defence, aerospace with DO-254 and AS9100, automotive with ISO 26262 and IATF 16949, medical devices with IEC 60601, and manufacturing each have their own compliance stack. Naming yours is a one-line summary of years of background.
Finally, say whether you design, commission or maintain. Design engineers, commissioning engineers and maintenance engineers are three distinct hiring markets with different travel expectations, different pay and different keywords, and a great many electrical engineers leave the reader to work out which one they are.
The electrical terms that carry screening weight
These adverts are written by engineers and read literally. These are the requirements that behave as filters, and what each is checking.
- Your discipline, named in the first line
- Power, electronics, controls, RF or building services. Without it every other keyword on the page is being read out of context.
- The design or study software
- Altium, ETAP, TIA Portal, PowerFactory, Dialux. The single most searched category in electrical recruitment, and non-substitutable.
- The standard, with its number
- BS 7671, NFPA 70E, IEC 61508, IPC-2221. Cited exactly in adverts and a fast proxy for which market and sector you trained in.
- The PLC or drive brand
- Siemens, Rockwell, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, Schneider. Controls hiring is brand-locked and “PLC programming” matches almost nothing.
- Voltage level and system scale
- LV, MV, HV, and the ratings you worked at. Instantly tells a reader whether your experience matches their estate.
- CEng, IEng or PE status
- Including working towards, with the institution. A stated requirement on senior consultancy and infrastructure postings.
- Test and commissioning experience
- Bring-up, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, energisation. Proves your designs met reality rather than only a simulator.
- The sector compliance stack
- DO-254, ISO 26262, IEC 60601, ATEX. One acronym that summarises a whole career's worth of context to the right hiring manager.

Electrical titles and the disciplines behind them
The generic title is the weakest search you can rely on. Put the discipline-specific equivalent beside it so both strings exist.
- Electrical Engineer
- The broadest term and worth carrying for volume. Never sufficient on its own; the discipline has to appear in the same breath.
- Electrical Design Engineer
- Design ownership rather than site or maintenance work. High-volume phrasing in UK consultancy and manufacturing postings.
- Power Systems Engineer
- Studies, protection and distribution. A well-paid specialist area with a small applicant pool and very specific software requirements.
- Controls Engineer / C&I Engineer
- Control and instrumentation is standard UK phrasing in process industries, water and energy. Almost unused in US adverts, which say controls engineer.
- Hardware Engineer / Electronics Engineer
- PCB and product development. In technology companies hardware engineer is the usual title; in UK industry electronics engineer is more common.
- Commissioning Engineer
- Site-based testing and handover. A distinct market with heavy travel, and a genuinely different set of keywords from design work.
How to get a Electrical Engineer Resume past the ATS
- Include specific British Standards references (BS 7671, BS EN standards) rather than generic 'electrical codes' to match UK-focused job descriptions
- List software tools with exact product names (e.g., 'AutoCAD Electrical' not just 'CAD software') as ATS searches for precise matches
- Use both abbreviations and full terms for key qualifications (e.g., 'Chartered Engineer (CEng)' and 'IET Member (MIET)') to capture different search variations
- Specify voltage levels and system types (LV, HV, three-phase) as these are common ATS filter criteria for electrical engineering roles
- Include industry sectors you've worked in (construction, manufacturing, utilities, renewable energy) as many ATS filters segment by sector experience
- Mention compliance and regulatory experience explicitly (CDM Regulations, IEC standards) as these are frequently searched terms in UK electrical engineering recruitment
Where electrical engineers lose to less qualified applicants
Blurring disciplines to look broader
A page that claims power, electronics and controls equally reads as none of them. Employers hire for one; lead with your discipline and let the others appear as supporting range.
No software named anywhere
“Experienced in electrical design” with no package named is unsearchable and unverifiable. The tool is the proof, and in this field it is also the training cost the employer is trying to avoid.
Standards mentioned generically
“Worked to relevant standards” tells a reader nothing. Cite two or three by number that genuinely applied to your work, and be ready to be asked about them.
Omitting degree accreditation and chartership progress
IET-accredited in the UK, ABET-accredited in the US, and whatever stage of chartership or licensure you have reached. Postings state these as requirements and they are a single clause to include.

Electrical Engineer Resume keywords — FAQ
Is chartership worth pursuing if I might work abroad?
CEng through the IET is well recognised across the Commonwealth, the Middle East and much of Asia, and there are mutual recognition arrangements that ease the path in several countries. It does not substitute for a US Professional Engineer license, which is granted state by state and requires its own examinations. If you are UK-based, CEng is worth having on its own terms; if you are targeting US infrastructure work, plan for the PE separately and list both.
How do I move from power systems into electronics, or the other way?
Accept that the page has to be rebuilt rather than reordered, because the two disciplines share almost no keywords. Lead with the genuinely transferable engineering — calculation rigour, standards work, testing discipline, project delivery — then get one concrete artefact in the target discipline onto the page: a board you have laid out and had made, or a study you have run in the target software. Without that artefact, the keyword gap is too wide for a recruiter to bridge on your behalf.
Should I list MATLAB?
Only if you use it for something you can describe. It appears on a very large number of electrical resumes because it appears in every degree, which has devalued it as a signal. Attached to a real model — a motor control simulation, a filter design, a power electronics converter — it is strong evidence. Listed alone in a skills block it is treated as a university module.
What if my work is defence-related and I cannot describe it?
Describe the engineering rather than the application. The discipline, the standards, the voltage or frequency ranges, the environmental requirements, the test regime and the team size are almost never the restricted part; the platform and the customer are. Say plainly that details are restricted, then give a technically specific description of what you did. Defence hiring managers are used to reading exactly this and will fill in the rest.
