Mechanical Engineer Resume Keywords: CAD, Standards and Chartership
Mechanical engineering job adverts are written by engineers, which makes them unusually literal. They name the CAD package, the analysis type, the standard by its number and the accreditation they expect, and the screen matches those strings exactly. Writing “proficient in CAD and FEA” on a page that never says SolidWorks or ANSYS is the most common reason a well-qualified mechanical engineer never gets read.
Three mechanical markets that barely share a vocabulary
Product and design engineering screens for CAD modeling, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, design for manufacture, prototyping and material selection. Manufacturing and process engineering screens for lean, cycle time, OEE, PPAP and APQP, CNC, fixtures and root cause analysis. Building services — which in the UK employs a very large share of everyone titled mechanical engineer — screens for heating and cooling loads, ductwork and pipework sizing, plant selection, Revit MEP, CIBSE guides and Part L compliance.
The word mechanical is the only real overlap. A building services engineer applying to a product design role with a page full of AHUs and load calculations will not surface, and the reverse is equally true. Decide which market you are in and let the page commit to it.
Where you have crossed between them, keep the crossing visible but subordinate. One line acknowledging manufacturing experience on a design-led page is credibility; three bullets of it is dilution.
CAD packages are separate strings and separate hiring markets
SolidWorks dominates SME product design and is the highest-volume CAD keyword overall. CATIA is the aerospace and automotive OEM standard. Siemens NX and PTC Creo hold the rest of the large-manufacturer market. Inventor and Fusion 360 sit with Autodesk shops, AutoCAD survives everywhere for 2D, and Revit MEP is the building services requirement. None of these searches will ever return a page that only says “3D CAD”.
PLM is the layer above and is named just as literally: Teamcenter, Windchill, ENOVIA, SOLIDWORKS PDM. Engineers who have owned release processes, engineering change notes or BOM structures should say so, because it is a scarcer skill than modeling and it separates you from graduates with the same package on their page.
Analysis splits the same way. FEA is a concept; ANSYS Mechanical, Abaqus, Nastran and SolidWorks Simulation are the products. CFD is a concept; ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM+ and OpenFOAM are the products. Write the concept and the product, and say what you analyzed — a fatigue study, a thermal model, a pressure vessel — because the verification detail is what makes the claim credible.
Sector standards are read as a shorthand for your whole background
Quality systems are sector-locked and instantly informative. AS9100 says aerospace. IATF 16949 says automotive. ISO 13485 says medical devices. ATEX or IECEx says hazardous area. PED or ASME VIII says pressure equipment. Naming yours puts you in front of the hiring managers who need it and honestly out of the way of those who do not.
Compliance marking has become a live keyword since UKCA joined CE in the British market, and postings for products sold in both name both. If you have prepared a technical file, run a risk assessment to ISO 12100, or taken a product through EMC and safety testing, those are strings very few competing pages carry.
Process improvement credentials are worth listing precisely. Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt with the awarding body and year reads as real; “Six Sigma trained” reads as an away day. The same applies to lean tools — value stream mapping, SMED, 5S, poka-yoke — which are searched individually.
The mechanical terms that carry the screening weight
Engineering adverts are long and specific. These are the requirements that behave as knockouts rather than preferences, and what each one is testing.
- The CAD package, by name
- The most searched string in mechanical recruitment. “CAD” matches the advert's prose and none of the recruiter's filters.
- GD&T with the standard
- ASME Y14.5 or BS 8888. Distinguishes an engineer who dimensions drawings properly from one who models shapes, and it is tested at interview.
- Tolerance stack-up
- A specific, checkable skill that appears in design postings and almost never on resumes. Cheap differentiation if you have done it.
- FEA or CFD with the solver
- ANSYS, Abaqus, Nastran, Fluent. The concept alone is claimed by everyone who has seen a color plot; the solver name is evidence.
- DFM and DFA
- Design for manufacture and assembly. Signals you have worked with production rather than only in the model, which is what most postings want.
- The sector quality standard
- AS9100, IATF 16949 or ISO 13485. A one-word summary of your entire background to a hiring manager in that sector.
- Materials and processes, named
- Sheet metal, castings, machining, welding and additive manufacturing are separate searches. “Materials knowledge” matches none of them, and postings name the ones they use.
- CEng or PE status
- Including “working towards”, with the institution and stage. It is a stated requirement on a meaningful share of senior postings.

The two markets certify engineers through entirely separate systems with no shared vocabulary. Whichever you hold, write it in full and name the institution, because the abbreviation on its own means nothing abroad.

Mechanical job titles and what each one implies
Title conventions differ between markets and sectors, and the wrong one puts you in the wrong pile. Pair your real title with the market-standard equivalent.
- Mechanical Engineer
- The broadest term and the right headline in most cases. Too broad on its own, so qualify it in the line beneath.
- Design Engineer / Mechanical Design Engineer
- The most common UK phrasing for product work and a higher-precision search than the generic title.
- Manufacturing or Process Engineer
- Signals the production side. A distinct market with its own vocabulary; do not use it as a synonym for design.
- Building Services Engineer
- UK consultancy phrasing for HVAC and plant design. Enormous UK volume, and invisible if your page only says mechanical engineer.
- HVAC Engineer
- The US equivalent of much building services work. Write whichever your target market uses and gloss the other.
- Project Engineer
- Implies schedule, cost and supplier ownership alongside technical work. Useful if you have moved that way; misleading if you are still purely design.
How to get a Mechanical Engineer Resume past the ATS
- Include specific CAD software names (e.g., 'SolidWorks 2022') rather than generic 'CAD experience' to match exact search terms
- List British Standards (BS EN) and ISO standards you've worked with, as these are frequently used as ATS filters in UK engineering roles
- Use both abbreviations and full terms for key concepts (e.g., 'FEA (Finite Element Analysis)') to capture different search variations
- Mention specific engineering disciplines within mechanical engineering (e.g., 'thermal engineering', 'mechatronics') if applicable to increase keyword density
- Include professional body membership and registration status (CEng, IEng) prominently, as recruiters often filter by chartered status
- Reference industry sectors you've worked in (automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing) as ATS often filters by domain experience
Where mechanical engineers lose the screen
Writing “CAD” and hoping
Every mechanical page says CAD. Almost none of the searches do. Name the package, the version family if it matters for the sector, and whether you have surfacing, sheet metal or assembly experience within it.
Describing the product, not the engineering
“Worked on a range of pumps” could mean anything from concept to updating a parts list. Say what you designed, to what standard, in what material, at what tolerance, and what was made.
Omitting the degree accreditation
A large number of UK postings state that the degree must be accredited by IMechE, and a large number of US postings say ABET. It is one clause and it clears a stated requirement.
Confidentiality as a reason to say nothing
Defence and OEM work is restricted, not unmentionable. Describe the class of component, the environment, the standards and the scale — “a safety-critical actuator qualified to DO-160 for a civil aerospace customer” — and leave the aircraft and the customer out.

Mechanical Engineer Resume keywords — FAQ
Should I list every CAD package I have touched?
List the ones you could sit a test in, and be explicit about the difference. Employers regularly set a two-hour modeling exercise in their own package, so a long list is a long list of things you can be caught on. Two packages you know well plus an honest “exposure to” line for the rest is stronger and more searchable than five listed as equals.
Is CEng worth listing when applying to US employers?
It will not substitute for a PE, because US licensure is a legal status granted state by state, but it is still worth having on the page with the institution spelled out — Chartered Engineer, Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It reads as evidence of a formal competence review and it costs a line. Do not lead with it; lead with the technical work.
How do I present projects covered by confidentiality?
Abstract one level up and keep every technical noun. The customer’s name and the project are usually the only genuinely restricted parts; the component type, the standards, the analysis you ran, the materials and the volumes are not. That version still contains all the searchable terms and is safer than saying nothing.
Do I need a Six Sigma belt?
For manufacturing and process roles it is frequently listed and genuinely useful. For product design it is close to irrelevant and can even suggest you have drifted away from design work. Where you do list it, give the belt level, the awarding organization and a project it was earned on — belts awarded for attendance are common enough that hiring managers check.
