Architect Resume Keywords: Registration, RIBA Stages and BIM

First, disambiguate the title

If you design buildings, never let the word stand alone at the top of the page. Write “Architect (ARB registered)”, “Project Architect, RIBA Chartered” or “Architectural Assistant Part 2”, and make sure the first two lines contain a building, a stage and a piece of legislation. That combination is what tells both a search filter and a human that you are in the built environment rather than in software.

If you arrived here designing systems rather than buildings, the vocabulary you need is elsewhere and it is worth saying so plainly: solution, enterprise, cloud and data architects are screened on TOGAF, architecture decision records, the C4 model, cloud platform certifications, microservices and event-driven patterns, integration, and non-functional requirements such as availability and latency. Almost nothing in the rest of this page will help you, and the most valuable thing you can do is add the qualifier — solution, cloud, enterprise, data — everywhere you currently write architect alone.

For building architects there is a second disambiguation to make: your sector and scale. Housing, education, healthcare, commercial, industrial, conservation and listed buildings, and residential extensions are separate hiring markets with different regulations and different client types. Give project values, floor areas and building types rather than a list of practice names, because a reviewer sizing you up is looking for whether you have worked on their kind of building.

Registration, stages and the contract

In the UK the title architect is protected by law and only those on the Architects Registration Board register may use it. RIBA chartered membership is separate and voluntary, and confusing the two on a resume is noticed immediately by anyone in the profession. Write your ARB registration explicitly, add RIBA membership if you hold it, and state your position on the Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 route if you are still qualifying — Part 2 graduates should describe themselves as architectural assistants, not architects.

Then work in stages, because that is how UK practices advertise. The RIBA Plan of Work 2020 runs from stage 0 strategic definition through concept and spatial coordination to technical design, manufacturing and construction, handover and use. Postings ask for people strong at particular stages, and technical design experience at stage 4 is in especially short supply. Say which stages you have run, on what building types, and how many times.

The contract side is what separates a designer from someone a practice can put in front of a client. Named contract forms — the JCT suite and NEC — contract administration, tender documentation and packages, valuations and payment certificates, technical queries and requests for information, site inspections and reports, snagging and practical completion. Add planning experience explicitly: pre-application advice, planning submissions, conditions discharge, appeals, conservation area and listed building consent.

Building safety, Part L and the software you draw in

The Building Safety Act 2022 changed UK architectural hiring more than anything else in a generation. Higher-risk buildings pass through gateways at planning, before construction and before occupation; the golden thread requires information to be maintained and handed over; and competence requirements now apply to the duty holders. Note that the Principal Designer role exists twice, under CDM 2015 for construction health and safety and under the Building Safety Act for design compliance — they are different appointments and using the terms interchangeably marks a candidate as not having worked under the new regime.

Environmental performance is the other regulatory theme. Building Regulations Part L and the fabric-first approach, energy performance certificates, overheating under Part O, Passivhaus certification, whole-life and embodied carbon assessment, BREEAM ratings, and the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge targets. Practices are hiring for this competence specifically, and it is still thin on most resumes.

Then the software, which is a hard filter in practice hiring. Revit is the dominant term and should be paired with BIM delivery vocabulary from ISO 19650 — information requirements, BIM execution plan, common data environment, level of information need, federated models and clash detection. ArchiCAD and Vectorworks lead in parts of the market, AutoCAD remains standard for detailing and legacy work, and Rhino with Grasshopper signals computational and geometry-led design. Add rendering tools such as Enscape, Twinmotion or Lumion, the Adobe suite for presentation, and NBS specification writing, which is frequently listed and rarely offered.

Architectural terms that get a practice to read on

Practices hire against stages, software and statutory knowledge. Portfolio quality decides the rest.

ARB registration

The legal basis for calling yourself an architect in the UK, and the first thing a practice checks. State it explicitly.

RIBA stage numbers

The way UK roles are advertised. “Stages 3 to 5 on schools” communicates more than a paragraph of description.

Revit and ISO 19650 vocabulary

BIM capability is a hard filter in most medium and large practices, and the standard itself is named in postings.

Contract form by name

JCT or NEC. Signals that you have administered a contract rather than only produced drawings.

Building Safety Act experience

Gateways, golden thread, Principal Designer duties. The most in-demand new competence in the UK profession.

Building type and project value

Housing, healthcare, education, conservation. Sector fit is what practices assess before anything else.

Part L and low-energy design

Passivhaus, embodied carbon, BREEAM. A stated requirement in a growing share of postings and still scarce on resumes.

A portfolio link that works

Architecture is judged visually. A plain-text URL with the file size kept sane is part of the application, not an extra.

How to get a Architect Resume past the ATS

• Include your ARB registration number and RIBA membership status prominently in your header or professional summary section
• List project sectors using standard UK terminology (residential, commercial, healthcare, education, mixed-use) as these are common ATS filters
• Reference specific RIBA Work Stages (0-7) when describing project involvement to match exact search terms recruiters use
• Specify project values in GBP and square metres/square footage as ATS systems often filter by project scale and budget experience
• Include both software brand names and generic terms (e.g., 'Revit' AND 'BIM software') as different practices search differently
• Mention UK-specific regulations and standards (Building Regulations Part L, Approved Document M, BS standards) that demonstrate local practice knowledge
